Harriet Tubman, born around 1820 as Araminta “Minty” Ross, was a courageous African American abolitionist, humanitarian, and one of the most prominent conductors of the Underground Railroad. She was born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland, and experienced the harsh and oppressive realities of enslavement from a very young age.
