Frederick Douglass, born as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey in February 1818 (the exact date is unknown), was an influential African American social reformer, abolitionist, writer, orator, and statesman. He is one of the most prominent figures in American history and a leading advocate for the abolition of slavery and the advancement of civil rights. Born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland, Douglass experienced the brutality and dehumanization of slavery from a young age. He was separated from his mother at an early age and endured harsh treatment from various slave owners. However, he never lost his determination to seek freedom and education.
